THIS WEEK’S WORDS come from “At the Bomb Testing Site” by William E. Stafford: noon, stone, scene, waited, desert, flute, farther, hard, panting, without, elbows, could

There we were at the scene, hands in elbows, waiting

A man with a flute walked to the desert, panting

Without hats, we could have sun stroke here at noon

The terrain vary, from river beds to sand dunes

Farther along the terrain was a hard stone

What was it doing there or was it a grave stone?

In the centre of the stone, we found some carved runes

The terrain vary, from river beds to sand dunes
