Thinking of some ways to recycle
At the same time something useful
For hedgehogs, toads, insects – their hotel
Make use of garden wastes as able
Safe hideaways and shelter for them
At the same time something useful
Assortment of leaves, twigs, stem
Wood chips, rolled up paper, tubing
Safe hideaways and shelter for them
Different niches for their basking
Their hotel when the wind is howling
Wood chips, rolled up paper, tubing
Bees buzzing, birds tweeting, blessing
When snow is piling up, they are safe
In their hotel they are boarding
Each insect a blessing vouchsafe
Thinking of some ways to recycle
When snow is piling up, they are safe
For hedgehogs, toads, insects – their hotel*

Love the rhythm in this. Not familiar with the terzanelle but i congratulate you both on your courage in attempting it and on your success in seeing it through. Some of these more formal verse types can be highly challenging. And what a simple, warm, love for all creatures type of message this sends.

Yesterday I disturbed a hedgehog sleeping under my garden hedge. After reading this lovely poem I now know that I need to build him or her a winter proof hotel.
