T is for Terzanelle

A lingering look towards the sea

My heart hoping to see the ship

My captain coming to rescue me

My legs carried me in the strip

With stretched arms waiting to be hugged

My heart hoping to see the ship

Since we were young I was always thugged

Instead the rain comes and I’m drenched

With stretched arms waiting to be hugged

A thirst that can never be quenched

Rocking my whole being with hope

Instead the rain comes and I’m drenched

The door to my heart’s there to cope

As narrow as the strip I wait

Rocking my whole being with hope

Now the passage being very strait

A lingering look towards the sea

Here I am waiting for our fate

My captain coming to rescue me*

The Terzanelle is a poetry type which is a combination of the villanelle and the terza rima forms. It is a 19-line poem consisting of five interlocking triplets/tercets plus a concluding quatrain in which the first and third lines of the first triplet appear as refrains. The middle line of each triplet is repeated, reappearing as the last line of the succeeding triplet with the exception of the center line of the next-to-the-last stanza which appears in the quatrain. The rhyme and refrain scheme for the triplets is as follows:
