THIS WEEK’S WORDS come from “The Dead Are Beautiful Tonight” by Luther Hughes: stain, stillness, subtle, sky, crows, bush, back, careful, web, salt, mouth, eyes
Give me something to sink my teeth into
Your eyes, your mouth and the sky above
The stillness of the night that is true
The salt of the earth and the crows flew
As subtle as a brooding dove
Give me something to sink my teeth into
Stand back and think what we’ve gone through
All the experience we couldn’t shove
The stillness of the night that is true
Accept our quirks just to name a few
The web we’ve spun as labour of love
Give me something to sink my teeth into
Just the two of us, me and you
The love and the respect thereof
The stillness of the night that is true
Two hearts one soul we both knew
Understanding and all the above
Give me something to sink my teeth into
The stillness of the night that is true*

- A Villanelle is a nineteen-line poem consisting of a very specific rhyming scheme: aba aba aba aba aba abaa.
- The first and the third lines in the first stanza are repeated in alternating order throughout the poem, and appear together in the last couplet (last two lines).
- One of the most famous Villanelle is “Do not go Gentle into that Good Night” by Dylan Thomas.
