Neighbours – Image by KL Caley
For visually challenged writers, the image shows two houses with matching doors, railings and winter decor.
THIS WEEK’S WORDS come from “Granddaughters” by Joy Harjo: thought, dream, fish, wing, river, boat, fever, starlit, red, shift, moon, ripening
We used to be neighbours with our cousins
By the dozens we had fun and laughter
And thereafter we cooked and baked muffins
Now in ruins I dream of a drafter
Starlit starbright with the full moon
And at high noon we go fishing
We swam from the boat in river
And shiver with fever
I still think of our neighbours
Read in papers for our leisure
Such a treasure fruit ripening
Enlightening weaver
My bedroom used to be painted in red
My brother Fred was always in left wing
And like a king he’d strut and go ahead
Such a red head fell down now with a sling
The shift from one to the next by dozens
With our cousins we’d always have laughter
From the rafter we sway with our cousins
And what remains we’re friends ever after*
