THIS WEEK’S WORDS come from “A Pan for Christmas” by Gillena Cox: parade, tabanca, gatherings, steelpan, music, grocery, safe, teacher, angel, top, ambition, forget
Hard to forget the year that was
Pandemic came and gatherings pause
Not safe to go to grocery without a mask
No parade, no time to revel and bask
With music health workers we applause
Music with steelpan or do tiktok just because
Nowhere to go, hardly used our cars
Ambition halt, just in the house with task
Hard to forget
On top of it a lot of social media faux pas
Not sure of the meaning and the cause
Angel of death and a wooden cask
A painful tabanca with my face mask
Shop online on that year that was
Hard to forget*

*A Rondeau is a French form, 15 lines long, consisting of three stanzas: a quintet, a quatrain, and a sestet with a rhyme scheme as follows: aabba aabR aabbaR. Lines 9 and 15 are short – a refrain (R) consisting of a phrase taken from line one. The other lines are longer (but all of the same metrical length).

Rondeau is an interesting format – gives a lot of scope for expression in its variety of stanzas.
