Food, glorious food!

Food, glorious, food! These are some of the food we’ve been cooking. Thanks for giving us this chance.

First – chicken with cashew nuts and chillies and egg fried rice. Prepared all ingredients. I was responsible for the fried rice and Him Indoors for the chicken. In a pan, I started with a tin of sweet corn and peppers and added 2 eggs with salt and pepper. Slowly, I added the cooked rice we had last night. For the Singaporean chicken, as Him Indoors calls his recipe, he started by frying some cashew nuts, prepared chillies and spring onions and put them aside. He then fried some chicken breast, added some chillies and soy sauce and put the rest of the ingredients together. We had chilled white wine with them.

Second – chilli con carne and rice. We had some Bolognese sauce left from the spaghetti we had the other day, so waste not, what not, chilli con carne! Anyway, heated the Bolognese sauce and added a tin of kidney beans and white beans. We cooked some rice to go with it and had some grapes for dessert. Delicious!

Last, but not the least – dolmades, my first time to cook and my own version. Ingredients included vine leaves from our garden, minced pork, pine nuts, onions, mints, thyme, dill and other herbs from the garden, salt, pepper, olive oil, lemon, rice. I washed the vine leaves, blanched them in boiling water and drained them in a colander. Soaked the rice in hot water and drained it. Chopped onions and the herbs. Mixed all ingredients in a bowl with my hands. Wrapped them with the leaves loosely and arranged them in a pan with a plate put on top of them so they won’t be undone. Covered with water and lemon juice. Boiled them for 30 to 45 minutes. Best serve hot. Not bad for my first try!

Tale Weaver/Fairy Tale – #175 – June 14th – Happy Ever After

Today we celebrate our 32nd Wedding Anniversary – yay!!! HRH the son and his beautiful K arrived yesterday and we are going to the fairy tale castle, Neuschwanstein this morning. In the evening we’re going to a posh Greek restaurant to celebrate it, the four of us! Tomorrow we invited some friends to be with us, too.

Wow, how time flies! To think that when we started we were both students or trainees, had moved from a studio in Birmingham, a maisonette with Mrs. Booth in Nottingham (we were on the top floor and every week we played cards with Mrs. Booth, bless her soul), a flat in Ramersdorf, a split house in Unterhaching, now a terrace house with a garden in the south of Munich. HRH the son was born two years after we moved to Germany and we have been living here for the last 28 years.

We’ve gone through thick and thin, through being fit and healthy to all the illnesses and now trying to be as healthy as possible. We’ve cried together, laughed a lot, sometimes ignored each other, accepted each other with all our quirks and idiosyncrasy, had a lot of tiffs, and so on. But at the end of it, we’re best mates, soul mates if there are such things and we don’t mind spending the rest of our lives together. Cheers everyone and thanks for letting us share our wedding anniversary with all of you.

Thirty two years of devotedness and love
All the experience and our adventure
With you it’s like a cooing of a dove
Together we try to find some answer

We’ve made our home and oh so contented
Our son and bride join us and tortoises
We’re grateful to all and feeling so blessed
Places we’ve visited give us real buzz

We’re so different and we argue sometimes
Each other’s quirks and idiosyncrasies
We have created our own paradigms
One thing for sure, the day we always seize

A lot of things to be thankful

Hello everyone! Hope you’re all fine. We are in the middle of a great renovation so our house is a total mess at the moment. After 20 years, when everything in the kitchen seem to be falling apart, we’ve decided to have a new one. It’s when we cannot open and close the door of refrigerator without fear that it will fall on us, or that the exhaust vent produce this alarming noise and not sucking the air out and the work surface has burnt places and scratches. Time for a new one!

That’s the first thank you – thank you for the 20 years’ service of the old kitchen. We’ve spent a lot of times cooking, preparing, listening to radio, talking, arguing, baking, etc. When HRH the son was small, he loved helping me bake some brownies.

Talking of HRH the son, and his beautiful K, they celebrated their second wedding anniversary yesterday – congratulations and best wishes! They will be here to visit us next month so we are looking forward to seeing them again.

Thank you for giving us nice spring weather, our flowers are blooming and the tortoises are happy eating their lettuce and dandelions.

Because we still don’t have a new kitchen, we have been cooking with just one burner camping cooker and an electric kettle so we’ve been testing our creativity as well as our patience to produce some meals. Thanks for testing us.

Sometimes, we go out for a meal, too and here are some of the food we’ve had.

Thank you for the holidays, glad we’ve got two weeks’ off because of Pentecost and spring break, we have time to sort out the mess, or to be in this mess while things are being done in the kitchen.

Thanks for the cycling trips we have been doing.

Have a lovely week everyone!

Premature – Daily Prompt

Nutritionally-aggressive-feeding-strategy-boosts-premature-baby-health_wrbm_large

It was tough, every month waiting and hoping, hoping for the positive result. Hoping for some good news. It has been nearly six years and we’ve been trying to have a baby. But it wasn’t meant to be. I would take the test and usually came out defeated. Not this month, perhaps next month, we’d be lucky. And so it carried on. Until we said OK we’re giving up, we just have to accept that we won’t be able to start a family. That it would be just the two of us. We planned for our lives together. We planned for some holidays. We joined the gym, we started cycling and walking. Life couldn’t be happier. Until the time we flew to Britain for holiday. I was sick, I thought it was just the turbulence. Then I just realised I haven’t had my period for quite some time, so I took the pregnancy test. To our big surprise – it was positive. I was pregnant. Such great feeling, to be pregnant without really thinking about it, without being worried about it. Great! Then he arrived, a premature baby, but we didn’t mind. He’s ours, he’s our big surprise! He’s now 26 and happily married to beautiful K.
